Vaginal Yeast Infection
A vaginal yeast infection is irritation of the vagina and the area around the vagina, known as the vulva.
It’s caused by an overgrowth of the fungus or yeast Candida. Yeast are normally present in the vagina in small amounts, however when there is an in-balance of bacteria in the vagina the result can be an over growth of yeast leading to infection.
What are the symptoms of vaginal yeast infection and vulvitis?
The symptom most commonly associated with a vaginal yeast infection is itching in the vaginal and/or vulvar area.
Other symptoms include: burning, soreness, pain during intercourse and/or urination, and vaginal discharge (Vaginal discharge is not always present, but when it occurs, the discharge is odourless and typically has a whitish, thick appearance and texture, like cottage cheese).
It should be noted however that a vaginal yeast infection or vulvitis have symptoms that are non-specific, which means that aside from the yeast infection, other conditions can cause the identical symptoms.
Vulvitis can also cause local pain in addition to the symptoms above. This is referred to as vulvodynia. In around 5% of women, yeast vulvovaginitis may cause a recurrent problem. A recurrent yeast infection occurs when a woman has four or more infections in one year that are not related to antibiotic use. A recurrent yeast infections may well be related to an underlying medical condition and may require more aggressive treatment.
